Dogs lick their noses to keep them moisturized because it enhances their sense of smell. A cold, wet nose captures scent particles and allows a dog to get a better handle on where a scent is coming from and how strong that scent is. But the moisture isn’t just coming from within, your dog is keeping its nose wet.
Are dogs supposed to have cold wet noses?
Some healthy dogs just have naturally dryer noses than others. Likewise, sick dogs can have cool, wet noses. “A wet nose is normal, but a dry nose isn’t necessarily abnormal.” A healthy dog may have a warm, dry nose after a nap, or after extreme physical exertion associated with dehydration.
How should a dogs nose feel?
If your dog is healthy then its nose should be the same size on both the left and right side and it should also feel moist to mildly dry. In addition, consistent in-and-out airflow should be noticed from both nostrils.
